Food & beverages

The industrial production of food and beverages is one of the largest industries worldwide. Since the water used is part of the end product, water quality is very important.

The Drinking Water Ordinance and the Mineral and Table Water Ordinance specify clear requirements for drinking water that must be used in the production of food and beverages. Food and beverage manufacturers therefore require various systems for filtration, softening, partial and complete desalination, and sterilization of the water.

Spiegl GmbH works with you to develop customized and efficient solutions for optimal results.

Well water treatment for starch factory in Emsland

Waterworks for a potato starch factory

In Emmlichheim in the Emsland region, we built a well water treatment plant for a potato starch factory. The plant was expanded several times to approx. 500 m³/h. The existing waterworks produced drinking water from surface water and was no longer up to date. On several occasions, inadequately treated water was supplied to a plant built by us.

Problem

Investigation into how groundwater can be used as an alternative to surface water. Groundwater is available in sufficient quantities, but has a high iron, manganese, and ammonium content. Iron: up to 30 mg/l Manganese: up to 1-2 mg/l Ammonium: approx. 5 mg/l (depending on the soil)

Solution

We selected a 3-stage plant technology that seemed suitable for this water. The customer had a separate building available for this purpose. The first stage is a film filter in which the water is aerated and most of the iron and ammonium is removed. The second stage removes the remaining iron, and the third stage removes the manganese.

Drinking water treatment for luxury hotel

Drinking water treatment plant 20m³/h

A highly customized freshwater treatment solution was implemented in a luxury hotel in Sicily. The space available required a special solution.

Sand filters, activated carbon filters, reverse osmosis with dosing, and subsequent remineralization of the water were implemented here in 2019.

Problem

The drinking water supply in a luxury hotel in Sicily did not meet the desired quality standards of technicians and guests.

The water had a high chloride content and tasted salty. In addition, it was sometimes cloudy and contained suspended solids.

Technical facilities such as the kitchen and laundry room experienced regular malfunctions due to the high water hardness and inadequate water quality.

Solution

Complete treatment of municipal water.

Starting with gravel filters to remove suspended solids. Activated carbon filters to remove recurring chlorine in municipal water, as this destroys the RO membranes and ion exchange resins. Followed by reverse osmosis with stabilization. To make the water suitable for drinking and showering, we have rehardened it and enriched it with minerals.
